Educators in Performance and Communication

EPC (pronounced "Epic") is a professional body set up to support, develop and register educators in performance and communication in New Zealand. 

No matter what syllabus you teach – Speech New Zealand, Trinity College, NCEA – you can join our community. Approved Teachers receive basic technical support, discounts to our many workshops, regular newsletters, shared resources and the platform to connect with other likeminded individuals.

EPC Member Workshops

EPC regularly host workshops for members and non-members throughout the year. Invited speakers and workshop hosts vary from award-winning authors, playwrights, vocal coaches, poets, theatre producers, film directors, illustrators and more.

Interviewed by Speech New Zealand examiner and teacher, Jillian Carpenter, Dame Miranda Harcourt DNZM shares her insights and expertise on revealing and connecting character through text.

Miranda and Jillian discuss creating authentic characters that drive the narrative from the text and techniques to honour a performers needs and safety whilst portraying and enveloping the emotional journey of a character.

World-acclaimed acting coach, Miranda works with Hollywood stars. Her many accolades include awards for Best Actress, Best Production, Best Short Film, the Media Peace Prize for the play VERBATIM, the NEXT Woman of the Year in Arts and Culture, the Westpac Woman of Influence, the Women in Film and Television Award for Outstanding Achievement and a Lodestar award for Film London.

As a professional body, there are three levels by which educators can be connected with EPC.

Committee Code of Practice

The purpose of the Committee for Educators in Performance and Communication is to:

  • Guide professional educators to become the best they can

  • Support professional educators in that journey

  • Support professional educators in applications for LAT, job applications, community work.

  • Establish transparent professional protocols for our learners

  • Provide clear health and safety/professional boundary expectations to professional educators: for example - respect, maintaining professional boundaries, inclusive environment; being aware of our own (often unspoken/assumed) values/beliefs.

  • Provide guidance in sound business practices.

These are the values for ethical behaviour that underpin our practice as educators.

When applying to become an Approved Educator, individuals agree to accept and abide by the following code of practice: 

  1. Act with integrity by using means that are fair, ethical, and just.

  2. Maintain cultural awareness and a commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and bicultural partnerships in Aotearoa New Zealand.

  3. Work to empower learners by using quality teaching and leadership strategies.

  4. Actively support and encourage professional colleagues in the industry.

  5. Engage in positive and collaborative relationships with learners, their families and the wider community.

  6. Create a welcoming, caring and creative learning environment that treats everyone with dignity and respect.

  7. Run financial affairs with integrity in a professional manner consistent with the business community.

  8. Undertake annual professional development and/or attend relevant workshops and training programmes to extend your profile in the community

  9. Possess an LSB of Speech New Zealand or LTCL of Trinity College, or some other such qualification as the Committee may determine (e.g. a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Theatre, English Literature etc) together with not less than two years adequate practical teaching experience.
