SPEECH NEW ZEALAND'S HIGH ACHIEVERS OF 2010

 

FURTHER SUCCESSES FOR SPEECH NZ/GEYSER COMMUNITY FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

 Elizabeth Marvelly received one of the first two Speech NZ/Geyser Community Foundation scholarships awarded at the launch of the Geyser Community Foundation in Rotorua in 2008.

The scholarship funded Elizabeth’s examination fees to become an Associate of Speech New Zealand. She completed all seven of the Associate examinations with great success.

Elizabeth’s musical career has taken her to an international audience, touring Australasia, Europe and the UK in 2008 and 2009. She has performed with British popular opera tenor Paul Potts and appeared at such prestigious venues at the Sydney Opera House and the Royal Albert Hall.

 After a quieter year in 2010, which included time at home in Rotorua, Elizabeth has completed her new album “Home”, to be released next month.

Now aged 21, Elizabeth credits much of her stage confidence to the speech and drama training that she completed with Gabrielle Thurston of Catch a Rising Start Ltd, in Rotorua.

 Ashleigh van den Akker also received an inaugural SNZ/GCF scholarship in 2008.

She too has become an Associate of Speech NZ.

Ashleigh has now completed a degree in English and Theatre at the University of Canterbury and has moved to Auckland, where she has begun employment within the business sector.

Ashleigh believes her success in securing a graduate position was greatly assisted by the written and oral communication skills she has developed through her work with Speech and Drama.

Ashleigh has also been appointed a Trustee of Speech NZ where she has special responsibility for Speech NZ's relationship with the Speech Communication Association.
